Current Produced In A Coil By A Moving Magnet (Faraday's Law)

video embedded; This demo is also known as Galvo and Coil, or magnet and coil.
Type of activity: demo
Activity code:  M-006b

Description:

Demonstrates the law of electromagnetic induction (Faraday's law of induction)
  1. Connect the galvanometer to the coil using banana cords.
  2. Place galvanometer on overhead projector
  3. Insert bar magnet into coil
  4. Observe the needle deflect and then decay to zero
  5. Withdraw magnet from coil
  6. Observe the needle deflect in the opposite direction and decay to zero
  7. By changing the rate of insertion (faster / slower), the meter deflection will vary accordingly

The 600 turn coil can be used with a weaker bar magnet.

Older setup uses also a sensitivity meter (Adjust sensitivity meter to avoid damaging galvanometer).
