Interference (Using Microwaves) 2

Type of activity: demo
Activity code:  W-017b

Description:

1. Connect as shown in diagram
2. Allow a few minutes warm up time for the Microwave Transmitter Power supply.
3. Remove the slit and with the Transmitter and Receiver in direct alignment, adjust the Microwave transmitter attenuator, adjustable black knob, located along the upper side of the waveguide just behind the horn, until the receiver output is maximum.
4. Adjust the speaker volume
5. Replace slit
6. Movement of the receiver in a horizontal plane should indicate minima at intervals of about 30 degrees with respect to the normal.

The apparatus is setup as shown in the diagram. Also refer to W-017a (ID#106) and the associated photographs. The Amplifier, and speaker are placed on a trolley so they can be easily moved. The demonstrator holding the receiver, in hand removes, moves it horizontally from side to side, using the attached string and wooden staff for alignment. The amplifier volume is adjusted so that minima and maxima can be distinguished throughout the lecture hall.
