Shishi Odoshi (A Non-Simple Non-Harmonic Oscillator)

Type of activity: demo
Activity code:  W-032

Description:

The shishi odoshi, or 'deer scarer', was originally used to scare away deer from rice paddies but later became a common garden feature. Water pours out of the top spout into a hollow bamboo shoot, the shoot tips over as it fills with water and empties. The pivot pin on the bamboo shoot is offset from its center of mass causing it to flip back up as it water empties out from it. The process is then repeated. The motion is repetitive, but it is discrete and discontinuous.

A variac is used to adjust the flow rate of the water pump. Equipment stored in Waves section (W1) room 201.

Setup as shown.
Demonstrates periodic motion that is not not simple harmonic.
