Van de Graaff Generator
Description:
1) Ground generator base (Banana jack) 2) Tape strings/fuzzies to the top of the metal sphere. 3) Place pie plates on top of the metal sphere 2) Turn on Generator After a few minutes, the metal sphere should be charged up: observe the strings and pie trays. Discharge through the brass rod by holding onto the glass handles, and connecting the metal sphere to the generator base. Optional: Connect one end of a fluorescent tube to ground, and place the other end close to the charged sphere in a darkened room. There is also a set of Franklin's Bells in MP101 that can be connected to the Van der Graaff. (actually invented by Andrew Gordon according to online sources, ~1742) The device is commonly misspelled Van de Graff, Van der Graaf or some combination thereof. |
