Energy Stored In A Capacitor

Type of activity: demo
Activity code:  E-004

Courses

Connect battery and capacitor according to labelled leads on the lamp/switch assembly, or according to the diagram below:

The switch connects the battery to the capacitor (charge), or the capacitor to the lamp (discharge).

Historical demonstration uses high voltage DC.

Apparatus:
3-15 watt bulbs,
Red capacitor box (0.24-14.62 mf),
Grey capacitor box (6 x10 mf),
125 V. D.C. source,
Switch, S.P.S.T. Switch

Setup:
1. Connect as shown
2. Use wooden board with 3 multiple sockets
3. Connect all capacitors in parallel

Method:
1. Close 125 V. D.C. switch (hold on 1-7 seconds)
2. Connect SPST switch to bank of capacitors
3. Discharge capacitors through 3-15 W light bulbs

Apparatus

Capacitor (large)
Battery (6V lead acid)
