Longitudinal Slinky

Type of activity: demo
Activity code:  W-002

Description:

Also known as slinky on a stand

  1. To send a signal wave - move plunger in and out once
  2. To show the interference of a transmitted and reflected wave - move the plunger back and forth twice at 1/2 second intervals

There was historically a motor that goes with this demonstration.

For standing waves (with motor)

  1. Connect bell wave machine crank via thread to slinky
  2. Use variable A.C. control box for speed adjustment
  3. Turn on motor and allow transient to diminish
  4. Adjust speed of motor and observe the various modes.
(Allow speed and number of modes to stabilize)
